Lauri Curtis, Vice President, Onboard Service at American Airlines, outlined a number of internal changes that American was making to streamline its operations and save money. Changes to their inflight services include outfitting the entire fleet of MD-80s with wireless internet service, and new wine glasses and chinaware. In addition, American has recently entered into an agreement with Boston Market to offer their sandwiches and salads for purchase on flights of more than three hours. On the ground, the airline has incorporated an electronic marshalling system which will guide aircraft to the gate during thunderstorms while keeping employees safe. Daryl Krause, Senior Vice President of Customer Services at the Dallas based carrier Southwest Airlines, outlined the airlines 40-plus years of consistently profitable operations that has overcome significant hurdles. Krause acknowledged that Southwest’s employees are the brands “best ambassadors”, noting that “Happy Employees = Happy Customers” and “Happy Customers = Happy Shareholders”. Although expanded food service may not be a current priority for Southwest, customer experience is. Southwest Airlines began trials for inflight Internet service earlier this year with plans to equip more aircraft with the service in 2010. Ken Chase, Wine Consultant to American Airlines, led an eager group of attendees in a morning session of “Wine Aerobics”. All in attendance tasted their way through an array of reds and whites, with Ken Chase teaching them the telltale signs of a good wine pairing with food. Mixed with entertaining stories, Chase taught tasting techniques that he guaranteed would make you the life of the party. IFSA President, Ken Samara, announced IFSA has embarked upon several strategic initiatives crucial to future success of the Association, based on member feedback and the changing environment. He stated, "the Board continues to pursue open dialogue with all industry partners with the goal to align industry activities to better serve membership needs and maximize benefits."
